What Is HPV and Why the Vaccine Matters
HPV, or human papillomavirus, is a very common virus that spreads through close skin contact during sex. Most infections clear on their own without any symptoms. A few high-risk types, mainly 16 and 18, can stay in the body and slowly change the cells of the cervix, which can turn into cancer over many years.
India carries a heavy share of this disease. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Indian women, and India accounts for about a quarter of cervical cancer deaths worldwide. HPV is an infection that can cause cancer years after infection. Vaccination helps prevent infection with the HPV types that cause most of these cancers.

These are typical private prices per dose. Consultation fees are usually charged separately.
Total Cost of a Full Course
What you finally pay depends on how many doses your doctor advises, which depends mainly on age at the first dose. The figures below use the standard 2 and 3 dose schedules.
Why Prices Differ Between Clinics
Each vaccine has a printed MRP, but hospitals may add consultation or injection charges, and big city hospitals usually charge more. Ask for the total cost of all doses before you start.
How Do the HPV Vaccines Differ in Price and Coverage?
When families compare the HPV vaccine price in India, the gap is large: a Gardasil 9 course costs about five times as much as Cervavac. Cervavac and Gardasil 4 cover HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18, while Gardasil 9 covers five more. The right choice depends on age, availability, approved use, cost and your doctor’s advice.
Is the HPV Vaccine Free in India?
It is, for one group. On 28 February 2026, the Prime Minister launched a national HPV vaccination programme from Ajmer, Rajasthan. It offers a free, single dose of Gardasil 4 to girls aged 14 at government health facilities. The vaccine is voluntary, and parents must give consent.
HPV Vaccine Cost in Government Hospitals
For an eligible 14-year-old girl, the cost is zero. The dose is given at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, Community Health Centres, district hospitals and government medical colleges. After the first 90-day campaign, it continues on routine immunisation days. By September 2026, more than 80 lakh doses had been given under the programme. Girls outside this age, boys and adult women are not covered yet, so they need a private clinic.
How Many Doses Do You Need?
- Age 9 to 14 (private): 1 or 2 doses, depending on the vaccine and your doctor. Cervavac’s label uses 2 doses, 6 months apart.
- Age 15 and above: usually 3 doses. Cervavac’s label uses 0, 2 and 6 months for ages 15 to 26.
- Government programme: 1 dose for 14-year-old girls.
Why only one dose in the government programme? Following World Health Organization advice, a single dose can be used for girls and boys aged 9 to 20, because it protects about as well as two doses. Many private clinics still follow the 2 or 3 dose schedule, so ask your doctor which plan suits your child.
Missed a dose? You do not need to start again. Just take the next dose as soon as you can and finish the schedule.
Why Getting It Early Matters
The vaccine works best before a person is ever exposed to HPV. A large Swedish study of nearly 1.7 million girls and women showed this clearly.
Earlier Vaccination, Bigger Protection
Lower risk of cervical cancer, by age at first dose
Compared with women who were not vaccinated. Source: Swedish national study of about 1.7 million girls and women, New England Journal of Medicine, 2020.
This is why doctors push for vaccination in the early teens. Getting it later still helps, just less.
Gardasil 4 vs Gardasil 9 vs Cervavac
The approved age range can vary by vaccine, so ask your doctor which one is appropriate for your age. Types 16 and 18 cause most cervical cancers, and all three vaccines cover them. Types 6 and 11 cause genital warts. Gardasil 9 adds five more cancer-causing types, which is why it costs more.
Who Should Get the HPV Vaccine?
Girls aged 9 to 14 get the most benefit. Boys can also be vaccinated at private clinics, within the vaccine’s approved age range. Some adult and married women may still be eligible, depending on age and the vaccine used. It protects only against HPV types they have not met yet, so the benefit is smaller than in the teens. Ask your doctor whether it makes sense for you.
If you are already seeing a gynaecologist for something else, such as irregular periods or PCOS, that visit is a good time to ask about it.
Before You Book: What to Know
- No test needed: no blood test or HPV test is routinely needed before the vaccine.
- Illness on the day: tell the doctor if your child is moderately or severely unwell, for example with a high fever during dengue season. A mild cold usually does not mean waiting.
- Other vaccines: it can usually be given on the same day as other vaccines, such as the flu shot that also protects against H1N1.
- Insurance: some health plans cover it only as an add-on or after a waiting period, so check your policy.
Keep in Mind
The HPV vaccine does not replace cervical screening. Vaccinated women still need regular Pap smear or HPV tests as their doctor advises, because the vaccine does not cover every cancer-causing HPV type.
Where to Get It and Is It Safe?
Privately, you can get the vaccine from a paediatrician, a gynaecologist or the vaccination centre of most large hospitals. Call ahead, as smaller clinics may not stock every brand.
Most side effects are mild and pass within a day or two: a sore arm, slight swelling where the injection was given, a mild fever or a headache. Some teenagers feel faint after any injection, so it helps to sit down for about 15 minutes afterwards.
Who Should Talk to a Doctor First?
- Serious allergy: anyone who had a severe allergic reaction to a previous HPV vaccine dose or one of its ingredients.
- Pregnancy: the vaccine is not given during pregnancy. If pregnancy starts after the first dose, the remaining doses are usually delayed until after delivery.
- Weak immunity: people with HIV or certain weakened immune conditions may need a 3 dose schedule. Ask your doctor which schedule applies to you.
Illustrative Scenario
Composite example, not a specific patient.
Meena was planning to spend about ₹22,000 on two doses of Gardasil 9 for her 14-year-old daughter. Then she heard about the government programme, and her daughter got a free dose of Gardasil 4 at the nearby health centre.
Key Takeaways
- Expect to pay about ₹2,000 to ₹10,850 per dose privately, depending on the brand.
- Count the total course cost, since the number of doses depends on age.
- Check the free government dose if your daughter is 14.
- Keep up cervical screening later, even after vaccination.
