Start with the question most Indian readers have. As of 9 October 2026 we could not identify a publicly listed Indian approval or official launch for the Wegovy pill, and no verified official Indian price was found in the sources reviewed.
Worth understanding anyway. It was the first oral GLP-1 approved for weight management, though no longer the only one, and the same molecule already sells in India in other forms.

That is not a formal confirmation from CDSCO, and the published list of approved new drugs for 2026 was last updated earlier in the year, so check the regulator’s latest records before making any purchase or treatment decision. Novo Nordisk says it intends to launch in more countries during the second half of 2026 but has named no timeline for India.
Two routes could change that. One is a direct Novo Nordisk launch after Indian approval. The other is specific to India: the main semaglutide patent here expired in March 2026, which is when generic injections began appearing. That removes one barrier, though it does not clear every formulation patent, and any Indian maker would still need its own CDSCO approval. Neither route has a confirmed date.
Because no Indian approval or official launch was identified in the public sources reviewed on 9 October 2026, be cautious of websites offering the Wegovy pill in India. The approval status and authenticity of what they are selling may not be clear. What we did was search publicly available records, which is not a formal confirmation from the regulator. What the Wegovy Pill Is
Semaglutide in tablet form at a 25 mg dose, alongside a reduced calorie diet and more activity. The United States label carries two uses that apply to different people. The weight use covers adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight with at least one weight-related health problem. The heart use, reducing the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke, applies only to adults who already have established cardiovascular disease and are also living with obesity or overweight. It is not a general heart benefit for everyone on the tablet.
Semaglutide copies GLP-1, a gut hormone released after meals. It prompts insulin release, signals fullness to the brain and slows stomach emptying. Appetite falls and weight comes down over months.
Why 25 mg in a tablet when the injection uses 2.4 mg? The gut destroys most of a swallowed peptide. The label puts oral absorption at roughly 1 to 2 percent against about 89 percent for the injection, which is also why the food rules are strict.
Where It Is Approved
The United States Food and Drug Administration cleared it on 22 December 2025, the first oral GLP-1 approved for weight management, and Novo Nordisk launched there in early January 2026. It did not stay alone for long: Eli Lilly’s orforglipron tablet, sold as Foundayo, was approved in the United States on 1 April 2026. The UK regulator approved the Wegovy pill on 11 June 2026, while noting that approval does not by itself mean NHS availability.
Europe worked differently. Wegovy already held an EU authorisation from January 2022 for the injection, so the tablet came as an extension rather than a fresh one. The medicines agency’s committee backed it on 21 May 2026 and the European Commission signed the decision on 14 July 2026, which Novo Nordisk announced the next day as its fifth regulatory approval, after the United States, the UK, the UAE and Bahrain.
How Much Weight People Lost
The weight approval rests on OASIS 4, a 71 week trial in 307 adults with obesity, or overweight plus a weight related condition, none of whom had diabetes. The main weight results were measured at week 64, with a follow up period after that. Participants were randomised two to one, 205 to the tablet and 102 to placebo. The cardiovascular part draws on a separate trial, SELECT.

OASIS 4, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2025. The two weight figures come from different analyses of the same trial, not from different studies.
Novo Nordisk describes the tablet’s weight loss as similar to the 2.4 mg injection, but that draws on separate trials rather than a head to head study, so treat it as broadly comparable rather than proven equal. Averages are not promises.

The routine matters as much as the dose, and the two regulators word it slightly differently. The European product information says at least eight hours without food, no more than 120 ml of plain water, then a 30 minute wait before eating, drinking or taking anything else. The United States label says an empty stomach in the morning, up to four ounces of water and the same 30 minute wait, without stating an eight hour fast. Follow whichever leaflet comes with your pack.
What It Costs
Without an Indian product there is no Indian price. The only official benchmark is the United States, where Novo Nordisk publishes self pay prices for each strength.

The Wegovy injection already sells in India, including under a second brand name, Poviztra, and generic semaglutide injections arrived after the patent expired. What a tablet would cost here is unknown. No verified official Indian price for the Wegovy pill appears in the sources reviewed, so treat any online figure as unconfirmed until an authorised launch and official pricing are announced.
Side Effects
Stomach and gut effects lead the list, as with every GLP-1. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and reduced appetite are the common ones, and they often peak when a dose rises. They can improve over time, but not always. Smaller meals and adequate fluids may help. Contact your doctor if symptoms are severe or persistent, or if you cannot keep fluids down. Gallstones can also develop, so report pain under the right ribs.
Gut side effects were common in OASIS 4, reported by 74.0 percent on the pill against 42.2 percent on placebo, but few quit over them. Discontinuations due to side effects ran at 6.9 against 5.9 percent.
- Severe or lasting stomach pain, especially spreading to the back, which can signal pancreatitis
- A lump or swelling in the neck, a hoarse voice, or trouble swallowing
- Dehydration from repeated vomiting or diarrhoea
- Shaking, sweating or confusion, if you also take diabetes medicines
Who Should Not Take It
Two situations rule the medicine out entirely under the United States label. One is a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or the rare MEN 2 syndrome, based on thyroid tumours seen in rodent studies and carried as a boxed warning. The other is a history of a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or any ingredient in the tablet.
Other situations call for caution rather than an outright bar. A past episode of pancreatitis is one, and it needs a specialist view rather than an automatic no. Safety and effectiveness of the tablets have not been established in people under 18. The product is approved for adult use under the United States label.
One limitation matters more in India than almost anywhere, because semaglutide is already widely sold here in other forms. The label says that using the Wegovy pill alongside any other semaglutide-containing product, or any other GLP-1 receptor agonist, is not recommended. In practice that covers Rybelsus, its Indian generics and semaglutide injections. Combining them does not double the benefit, it stacks the side effects. Tell your doctor everything you already take, and note that combining a GLP-1 with insulin or a sulfonylurea also raises the chance of low blood sugar.
Pregnancy is a firm stop. The label says to stop the medicine as soon as pregnancy is recognised, and to stop it at least two months before a planned pregnancy, because semaglutide stays in the body for weeks. Breastfeeding needs its own conversation: the United States patient information does not recommend breastfeeding during treatment with Wegovy tablets.
