For four years Rybelsus was the only semaglutide tablet you could buy in India, and the monthly bill showed it. That changed in 2026, and the cheapest tablet now costs about a third of the branded one.
Here is what actually launched, what each brand charges, and what has not changed at all.

What Changed in 2026
Novo Nordisk’s main semaglutide patent in India expired on 20 March 2026. Torrent Pharmaceuticals launched the first Indian oral semaglutide the next day under the brands Sembolic and Semalix. Dr Reddy’s followed with Obeda on 20 May 2026.
Worth being precise. The expiry covered the main molecule patent, not every patent around the product. A tablet also needs an absorption enhancer called SNAC to get semaglutide through the gut, and that formulation work is harder than filling a pen. Several makers launched injections in March, but only two had tablets ready.

These are the major oral brands we could confirm. Most other semaglutide launches in India are injections rather than tablets, and new names keep appearing, so ask your chemist what has reached your city.

Rybelsus MRPs from pharmacy listings checked 9 October 2026. Obeda prices as announced by Dr Reddy’s at launch. On these figures a generic tablet works out 38 to 67 percent cheaper, depending on strength.
A month usually means 30 tablets, so at these MRPs the 7 mg strength runs about 9,900 rupees on Rybelsus against roughly 4,050 on Obeda. Treat that as an estimate. MRPs change, online sellers discount below them, and the printed figure on the strip is the one that counts. Torrent has not published tablet MRPs, so check the pack.
Stock of the newer brands is still uneven across cities. Ring your pharmacy before you travel for a refill, and keep your bill if you plan to claim on insurance.
Generic or Biosimilar
You will see both words, and the companies themselves do not agree. Torrent calls its tablets generic oral semaglutide. Dr Reddy’s describes Obeda as a biosimilar. Which label applies comes down to the approval route the regulator used, not to the molecule itself, and we have not seen the approval document for either product.
The label is not purely academic, because approval routes and substitution rules differ between generics and biosimilars. Neither lets a pharmacist swap your brand without the prescriber agreeing. Dr Reddy’s says CDSCO cleared Obeda after an Indian Phase 3 study that found efficacy non-inferior to the originator, with a comparable safety profile.
What It Treats
Oral semaglutide is approved in India as an add on to diet and exercise for adults with type 2 diabetes, usually once metformin or similar tablets stop being enough. It lowers HbA1c and blunts the post meal sugar rise.
PIONEER 6 tested oral semaglutide in 3,183 adults at high cardiovascular risk and met its objective of ruling out excess risk, with a hazard ratio of 0.79 and a confidence interval of 0.57 to 1.11 against placebo. That is non-inferiority, not superiority. The label still carries no indication for reducing cardiovascular risk.
Appetite drops on this medicine, so some weight loss is common. That is a side effect, not an approved use. The tablet is not licensed in India for weight loss, and obesity uses different, higher dose products such as Poviztra. Buying tablets on your own to slim down skips every check a consultation builds in.
How the Dose Steps Up
The usual labelled schedule starts at 3 mg once daily for 30 days. That strength is for tolerance, not for sugar control on its own. Most people then move to 7 mg for at least 30 days, and 14 mg is reserved for those who need more. Your doctor decides every step.
- First thing in the morning, empty stomach, with no more than half a glass of plain water, about 120 ml.
- Swallow whole. Never split, crush or chew it, and keep each tablet sealed until you take it.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before food, tea or any other medicine.
- For a missed dose, follow the leaflet in your pack and ask your doctor. Never double up, and never take two 7 mg tablets in place of a 14 mg.
Side Effects
Nausea leads the list, followed by vomiting, loose motions, constipation, stomach pain and reduced appetite. Most of it shows up in the first few weeks or after a dose increase, then settles. Smaller meals and steady sips of water help. Feeling queasy in week one does not mean the medicine is failing.
Four things need more attention. Gallstones can develop, so report pain in the upper right abdomen. Ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you enough to strain the kidneys. If you have diabetic retinopathy, tell your doctor, because a fast improvement in sugar can briefly affect the eyes. And if you take levothyroxine, say so. Product information notes that oral semaglutide raises levothyroxine exposure, so your doctor may want to monitor thyroid levels. That does not mean every patient needs a dose change.
On its own this medicine rarely causes low blood sugar. Combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea the risk rises, and your doctor may lower the other medicine to allow for it.
- Severe, constant pain in the upper belly, often spreading to the back, with vomiting. This can signal pancreatitis.
- Swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing
- Repeated vomiting with signs of dehydration
- A low sugar episode where the person cannot respond. In India, call 112 or 108.
Who Should Not Take It
This medicine is for type 2 diabetes. It cannot replace insulin, so it does not suit type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Past pancreatitis calls for caution and specialist review, and severe delayed stomach emptying makes it a poor fit.
Thyroid cancer causes the most confusion. In the United States the semaglutide label carries a boxed warning and a contraindication for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or the rare MEN 2 syndrome, based on thyroid tumours seen in rodents. European and Indian labelling words this differently. Read the leaflet in your own pack and raise any family history of thyroid cancer with your doctor.
Pregnancy is a firm stop. Product information advises stopping at least two months before a planned pregnancy, because the medicine clears slowly. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment, and safety under 18 has not been established.
Buying It Safely
Every oral semaglutide brand in India is prescription only. A chemist should not substitute the brand your doctor wrote without the doctor agreeing. Avoid any website offering to ship it without a prescription, because that route is illegal and the easiest way to end up with a fake.
Before paying, read the strip. Brand name, strength, manufacturer, batch number, expiry date and printed MRP should be clear and match the outer carton. Demand attracts counterfeits.
