Semaglutide Brands in India: Names, Prices and How They Differ

Which semaglutide names you may see at the pharmacy, what they cost, and what actually differs between them.

Semaglutide brands in India now include Novo Nordisk’s original Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus, plus many Indian brands such as Obeda, Semaglyn, Semasize, Sematrinity and Noveltreat. They arrived after the Indian patent on semaglutide expired on 20 March 2026, as reported by Reuters, and some vial-based products were launched from about ₹1,290 a month.

If the pharmacy hands you an unfamiliar name, this guide shows who makes it, what it costs, and what to check before you use it. Prices below are those reported at launch in March and April 2026, and they change often.

Why One Medicine Has So Many Brand Names

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 medicine used for type 2 diabetes and, in some brands, for weight management. It comes as a once-weekly injection and as a daily tablet. It copies a gut hormone that helps the body control blood sugar after meals and makes you feel full sooner.

Novo Nordisk held key patent protection for semaglutide in India, which limited generic competition for years. After the patent expired on 20 March 2026, Indian companies began launching their own semaglutide products. Demand is huge: India has about 101 million adults with diabetes, and type 2 diabetes in young Indians is rising fast. If you have only noticed early signs of type 2 diabetes, a proper diagnosis comes before any brand choice.

Semaglutide Brands in India: Who Makes What

This table lists the brands with clear public launch information. It is for recognising names, not for ranking them.

Industry estimates earlier in 2026 suggested that more than 50 semaglutide brands could enter the Indian market, so you may see names that are not listed here.

Same Maker, Different Name

Some brands are marketed through partnerships. Under agreements announced in March 2026, Lupin co-markets Zydus’s semaglutide as Semanext and Livarise, and Zydus manufactures and supplies Torrent’s Sembolic. So a new name on the box does not always mean a different maker. Check the manufacturer printed on your pack.

Obeda (Dr Reddy’s)

According to Dr Reddy’s, Obeda was India’s first semaglutide injection approved by the Drugs Controller General of India. It comes in 2 mg and 4 mg pre-filled pens for type 2 diabetes, at a reported launch price of about ₹4,200 a month. In a Phase III head-to-head trial of 312 participants, the company reported that Obeda showed non-inferior efficacy and similar safety compared with the original.

Semaglyn (Zydus)

Semaglyn uses a reusable pen with a 15 mg cartridge, so one pen can deliver different doses as your dose goes up. Zydus says it is approved for type 2 diabetes and obesity, and in its launch announcement it reported an average monthly treatment cost of about ₹2,200.

Semasize (Alkem)

Semasize is Alkem’s main semaglutide brand, sold alongside Obesema and Hepaglide. Ask your pharmacist which of the three names and strengths matches your prescription before you buy.

Semaglutide Price in India

Prices depend on the brand, the dose and whether you buy a vial or a pen. The figures below are approximate monthly equivalents of prices reported at launch, mostly for starting doses. Higher doses cost more, so check the current price before buying.

Are Cheaper Brands the Same Medicine?

Approved semaglutide brands use semaglutide as the active ingredient. They can still differ in their device, strengths, approved uses and the amount of clinical data behind them. Obeda, for example, has published head-to-head trial results, while some newer names have less public data.

Lower prices can result from increased competition after patent expiry. A lower price does not by itself mean the active ingredient is weaker. Still, choose an approved brand with your doctor, and never buy from unverified sellers.

Injection or Tablet?

Most Indian semaglutide products currently on the market are once-weekly injections. Rybelsus from Novo Nordisk remains the established tablet option.

How to Check a Genuine Semaglutide Product

• Buy only on prescription: from a licensed pharmacy, with a proper bill.
• Check the box: brand, manufacturer name, batch number and expiry date should all be printed clearly.
• Check the cold chain: the pack should come from a fridge, sealed and undamaged.
• Avoid loose or unlabelled vials: and sellers on WhatsApp or Instagram.
• Read the leaflet: dose, storage and missed-dose rules can differ between brands.

How to Choose Between Semaglutide Brands in India

With so many semaglutide brands in India, the choice can feel confusing. These questions make the conversation with your doctor easier:

• Is it approved for my reason? Some brands are launched for diabetes, others for weight management, and some for both.
• Does it come in my dose? Not every brand offers every strength, and your dose will rise over the first months.
• Pen or vial? If your product comes in a vial, follow its exact dosing instructions and use the measuring device recommended for it.
• What will it cost at my dose? Compare the cost at the dose you are expected to use long term, not only the starting dose.

Semaglutide Is Not Mounjaro

Side Effects and Who Should Be Careful

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation, mostly in the first weeks and after a dose increase. Starting low and increasing slowly can help. The risk of low blood sugar is higher when semaglutide is used with insulin or certain diabetes tablets, so your doctor may adjust your treatment or ask you to check your sugar more closely. • Do not use: if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), if you have MEN2, or if you had a serious allergy to semaglutide.
• Pregnancy: semaglutide should not be used during pregnancy. If you are planning one, speak with your doctor about stopping at least 2 months beforehand.
• Type 1 diabetes: semaglutide is not approved for it and does not replace insulin.
• Tell your doctor about: past pancreatitis, gallstones, kidney problems or diabetic eye disease.

Storage and Missed Doses: Follow Your Pack

Rules differ by brand, so always follow the leaflet in your box. As an example, the Ozempic label says: keep new pens in the fridge at 2 to 8°C, use an opened pen within 56 days, and if you miss a dose, take it within 5 days or skip it. Your doctor will track your HbA1c to see how well it is working.
