Which everyday Indian foods help, which ones to limit, and how to time your thyroid tablet around meals.

A thyroid diet chart is a daily eating plan that fits around your thyroid treatment. It cannot cure a thyroid problem or replace your tablet. What it can do is keep your meals balanced, give your thyroid the iodine it needs, and stop food from getting in the way of your medicine.
Thyroid problems are common in India. In a study of 5,360 adults across eight Indian cities, published in 2013, about 1 in 10 had hypothyroidism, and about a third of those people had not known it.1 If your report has just shown a high TSH, our thyroid test normal range chart explains what the numbers mean.
Quick Answer
- Eat: Build meals around dal, eggs, fish, curd, cooked vegetables and whole grains, and cook with iodised salt.
- Limit: Iodine supplements and seaweed, very large amounts of raw cabbage-family vegetables, and soy close to tablet time.
- Tablet: Take levothyroxine with plain water on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast.
- Remember: Food supports your treatment. It does not replace it.
Who This Thyroid Diet Chart Is For
This guide is mainly for adults with an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), including anyone taking levothyroxine. A shorter section covers an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). If you are pregnant, have thyroid cancer, or are preparing for radioactive iodine treatment, your food needs can be quite different, so follow the plan your own doctor gives you.
What Food Can and Cannot Do for Your Thyroid
No food, drink or powder has been shown to cure hypothyroidism. The treatment is a daily thyroid hormone tablet, usually levothyroxine, sold in India under brand names such as Thyronorm and Eltroxin.
Diet still matters in two practical ways. Your thyroid needs iodine, which most Indians get from iodised salt. And some foods and supplements reduce how much of the tablet you absorb if taken too close together. A good thyroid diet chart protects your dose and helps with the tiredness, weight gain and constipation that often come with a slow thyroid.
Foods to Eat for Thyroid Health
Think in nutrients, not miracle foods. Your kitchen already has the sources.
Good to Know
Brazil nuts are often sold as a thyroid superfood. A single nut can hold about 68 to 91 mcg of selenium, and eating them regularly can push you past the safe upper limit.2 Some studies have also found little thyroid benefit from selenium supplements. If you like them, one now and then is plenty, and do not combine them with a selenium supplement unless your doctor advises it.
If your hypothyroidism comes from Hashimoto’s disease, the autoimmune type, no diet has been proven to cure or reverse it. A balanced plate, without unnecessary iodine or selenium supplements, is the safe approach.
Thyroid Foods to Avoid or Limit
Very few foods are truly off limits. Usually the issue is the amount, or the timing around your tablet.
The cabbage family has a worse reputation than it deserves. A 2024 systematic review of 123 studies found no clear evidence that a normal daily intake of these vegetables harms thyroid function when iodine intake is adequate.3 So gobhi, patta gobhi and broccoli can stay on your plate. There is no need to avoid gluten unless you have coeliac disease or another medical reason to do so.
How to Time Your Thyroid Tablet Around Food
This is the part of your routine that most directly affects your treatment. Take the tablet with plain water only, not tea, coffee, milk or juice.4, 5, 6
| What | How Long to Wait After the Tablet |
|---|---|
| Breakfast, tea, coffee, milk | 30 to 60 minutes |
| Calcium or iron tablets, antacids, multivitamins with minerals | About 4 hours |
| Soy foods and fibre supplements | About 4 hours |
| Taking the tablet at bedtime instead | At least 4 hours after your evening meal |
Whichever routine you choose, keep it the same every day. Taking the tablet sometimes with breakfast and sometimes without can make your TSH readings swing.7
A One-Day Indian Thyroid Diet Chart
This sample thyroid diet chart suits an adult with an underactive thyroid who takes the tablet in the morning. Adjust portions with your doctor or a dietitian, especially if you also have diabetes.
Cook with iodised salt. Rock salt and pink salt are popular, but they usually have no added iodine, so check the label and keep them for occasional use.
Thyroid Diet Chart for Women
The same thyroid diet chart works for women and men. Thyroid problems are simply more common in women. In the eight-city Indian study, hypothyroidism was found in about 16% of women compared with 5% of men.1
Pregnancy and breastfeeding need extra care, because the body needs more iodine during these months.8 If you take levothyroxine, tell your doctor as soon as you know you are pregnant, because your needs may change. Do not change your dose, or start or stop iodine supplements, without medical advice.
What About an Overactive Thyroid?
Hyperthyroidism is the opposite problem. Large amounts of iodine from kelp, other seaweed or iodine supplements can cause or worsen it, so avoid them.9 Ask your doctor whether you need to limit iodine further.
A low-iodine diet is only for a short period, often 1 to 2 weeks before radioactive iodine treatment, and only when your treatment plan calls for it.10 If you have a racing heart or poor sleep, ask your doctor whether to cut down on tea and coffee. An overactive thyroid can also weaken bones, so include milk, curd and paneer. A fast or irregular heartbeat needs a doctor’s check, as an overactive thyroid is one known trigger of atrial fibrillation.
Can a Thyroid Diet Chart Help You Lose Weight?
Weight loss usually becomes easier once your thyroid levels are controlled. The same basics then apply as for anyone: smaller portions of rice and roti, more protein, fibre and vegetables, and daily movement. If your levels are still off, treating the thyroid is an important part of managing weight. Extra weight also raises the risk of high blood sugar, so it helps to know your numbers from our blood sugar chart by age.
When to See a Doctor
See a doctor for ongoing tiredness, unexplained weight change, a neck swelling, or a heartbeat that feels unusually slow or fast. An underactive thyroid can slow the heart, and our guide to bradycardia symptoms explains the warning signs.
Keep in Mind
Call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, or a very fast, irregular heartbeat.
Illustrative Scenario
Composite example, not a specific patient.
Sunita, 42, had taken her thyroid tablet with morning chai for years, and her thyroid tests were sometimes outside her target range. Her doctor asked her to take it with water on waking, have chai later, and keep her calcium tablet well away from it, then rechecked her levels at the next visit.
Key Takeaways
- Take your thyroid tablet at the same time each day with plain water.
- Use iodised salt for daily cooking and avoid iodine or selenium supplements unless your doctor advises them.
- Keep calcium and iron supplements, soy foods and fibre supplements about 4 hours away from your tablet.
- Use this thyroid diet chart to support your treatment, and recheck your thyroid levels when your doctor advises.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Indian foods are good for thyroid?
Dal, eggs, fish, curd, milk, cooked vegetables, fruit and whole grains all fit well. Cooking with iodised salt gives your thyroid the iodine it needs.
Which foods should thyroid patients avoid?
Mainly iodine supplements, kelp and seaweed, very large amounts of raw cabbage-family vegetables, and soy close to tablet time. Most other foods are fine in normal amounts.
Can I drink tea or coffee with my thyroid tablet?
Not at the same time. Take the tablet with water, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before tea, coffee or breakfast.
Is curd or milk bad for thyroid?
No. Milk and curd can be part of a healthy thyroid diet. However, calcium can affect levothyroxine absorption, so follow the timing advised for your medicine and keep calcium supplements at least 4 hours away.
Can I eat cabbage and cauliflower with hypothyroidism?
Yes. A 2024 review found no clear evidence of harm from normal intake when iodine intake is adequate. Cooked, normal portions are fine.
Are Brazil nuts good for thyroid?
They are very high in selenium, so you do not need them daily. One now and then is enough, and never alongside a selenium supplement unless your doctor advises it.
Can diet cure hypothyroidism?
No. Diet supports treatment, but the thyroid tablet is what replaces the missing hormone.
Is pink salt better than iodised salt for thyroid?
For daily cooking, iodised salt is the better choice because it supplies iodine. Pink or rock salt usually has no added iodine, so check the label.
